  • Did you miss this Council meeting? See below for a summary of the main items discussed:

    • Council voted to approve the receipt of two sculptures to be installed in City parks.
    • Council gave First, Second and Third reading to repeal the previous Permissive Property Tax Exemption Bylaw and replace it with a new Bylaw for 2026-2027.
    • Council voted to support the relocation of the three replica Totem Poles at the Recreation Centre around the All-Native Basketball Tournament 2026 dates, with the intent to respectfully lay to rest the existing Haida-style replica poles and eventually replace them with one traditionally carved Ts’msyen pole that more accurately reflects the heritage and identity of the territory. As part of the first phase of this respectful transition, the existing replica poles will not be discarded. Instead, they will be carefully removed and laid to rest just in front of the plaza, in a manner respectful of cultural practices and community values. Interpretive signage will accompany the poles to tell the story of their creation, share the history and lineage of the carver, and provide important educational context about why they are being relocated. This will help preserve their history and bring to focus the local Ts’msyen Indigenous culture. Next steps will involve the City initiating a committee with all affiliated participants, obtaining permits and following  traditional protocols for moving the poles.
