Social Development Assessment

In recent years, the City of Prince Rupert has experienced increasing social challenges including a growing income disparity, high household and child poverty rates, and increased visible homelessness and substance use. The COVID pandemic and worsening housing challenges have
increased the barriers to supporting people experiencing poverty and overlapping
experiences with mental health and addictions.

In light of these challenges, the City completed a Social Development Assessment to highlight key challenges and strengths across the social service sector in Prince Rupert. This work was informed with valuable input from countless local service providers as well as lived experience interviews from clients at the Salvation Army and the North Coast Transition Society's Crane Crossing Shelter. This document is a summary of the findings from our work with them, alongside with recommendations for the role that the municipality can play in supporting the social service sector and the needs of residents.
