The following information is about the eligibility criteria for working at the City of Prince Rupert.

Eligibility requirements

Before you apply for a position, you must meet the eligibility requirements. All positions at the City of Prince Rupert require applicants to be at least 16 years old and eligible to work in Canada. 

To be eligible to work in Canada, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada or authorized in writing to work in Canada under the federal Immigration Act. Eligibility to work in Canada is granted through citizenship, permanent resident status, or a work permit.

You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to accept a permanent job offer (unless stated otherwise in the posting).

If you have a valid temporary work permit, you may be eligible for temporary (auxiliary) work, but only until your work permit expires or is renewed. For information on temporary work permit requirements, visit Immigration and Citizenship Canada.

Our salary levels are generally competitive with the private sector and are reviewed periodically. The majority of City employees are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees. The City pays bi-weekly on Friday; automatic deposit is mandatory.

The City of Prince Rupert offers a comprehensive benefit package through Manulife Financial. Benefits include Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Extended Health Care, Dental Care and Long Term Disability. There is also a Pension Plan for regular full-time employees. Compared to other organizations, the City’s plan is one of the most generous because the City pays for the premium for the benefit package. Also, employees, their qualifying spouse or domestic partner, and qualifying dependents are eligible for insurance coverage. Furthermore, employees are covered for injuries that occur while carrying out the function of their employment.

An Employee and Family Assistance Program (FAP) is available for employees and their families requiring confidential counseling services through Lifeworks Employee Assistance.

Employees accumulate paid sick leave. Sick Leave provisions are provided for absences from work by virtue of being sick or disabled. There is a paid vacation and public holiday entitlement, and leave of absence entitlement in such events as jury duty, maternity leave, etc.

It is the practice of the City of Prince Rupert to promote the continuing education of our employees, and to encourage employees to upgrade their skills at every opportunity. The City provides financial assistance to qualifying employees wishing to grow with us.

With increased skills and experience during your time with the City, you have more opportunity for advancement. The City of Prince Rupert prefers the internal promotion of its employees. All vacant positions are posted for 7 calendar days on internal Notice Boards. If no one is qualified for the position internally, the position will then be advertised to the public.
