A reminder that the property tax deadline is coming up. See below for details on how to ensure your payment is received on time, claiming the home owner grant, and more.
- You can pay in person, at the drop off slot at City Hall or by Mail: Payments by cheque (including post-dated cheques), debit or money order can be made during business hours, 9:30-4:30 pm Monday to Friday. Postmarks are NOT accepted as date of payment.
- Paying through online banking: Ensure payment is received in the City’s bank account by the due date. Like postmarks, payments in transit from financial institutions are not considered paid until received. Penalty is levied if payment not received by the due date.
- Online banking payments: Log in to your online banking system, and go to the ‘Add Payee’ section. Search under ‘Prince Rupert’ to add the City as a bill payee along with your roll number (without the decimal).
- Payment by calling your bank: You may also be able to call in to your financial institution with your roll number to request they pay the bill for you over the phone from your account.
- Credit Card Payments: We do not accept payment of property taxes directly through credit cards.
- Pre-Authorized payments: Have monthly pre-authorized payments automatically debited from your account to take the sting off for future years. Contact City Hall to apply—(250) 627 0964. Paying this way eliminates large one-time annual payments.
Applying for the Home Owner Grant
This must be done every year. The Home Owner Grant is a property tax assistance program offered by the Provincial government. Applications are no longer accepted by municipalities.
The following is contact information to make your application:
Phone: 1-888-355-2700
Even if your taxes have been paid through your mortgage company or by using our pre-authorized payment plan, you must still complete and submit the Home Owner Grant application by the due date, the same date property taxes are due.
BC Government Property Tax Deferment
You may be eligible to defer paying taxes through the BC Government Tax Deferment Program. Program criteria include being over 55 years of age or a surviving spouse, being disabled, and supporting children under the age of 18. These programs require that you pay your Utilities (water, sewer, and garbage), but the amount of taxes remaining after your Home Owner Grant has been deducted can be paid for you. As the program is a ‘deferment’, at some time in the future you will be required to reimburse the Provincial Government. More information can be found at the City Hall Customer Service Desk.
