  • Did you miss Monday's Council Meeting? We’ve got you covered. See below for a summary of the outcomes of the meeting:

    • Council received an update from the Director of Operations and Intergovernmental Relations on Major Projects. See the graphic for details.
Bar graph detailing the progress of different major projects being completed in Prince Rupert.

    • Council voted to send a Development Variance Permit for 201 7th Avenue East to Public Notification.
    • Council voted in favour of staff’s recommendation to achieve public assent for the borrowing of funds to replace our RCMP detachment through an Alternative Approval Process. As a refresher from the January 10th meeting, this Bylaw must be passed before the City can borrow $25 million in funds to build a new RCMP building, which we are required to do to meet the standards outlined in our policing Agreement. An Alternative Approval Process allows Mayor and Council to proceed with borrowing unless at least 10% of eligible electors state their opposition to the loan. More information on how the public can participate in the Alternative Approval Process will be shared in the newspaper, on our website, and social media platforms as soon as the Province gives the go ahead to proceed with the AAP.  Additional information on the RCMP project is below:
      • The loan is planned to be paid back over a 30 year period, and is estimated to increase taxes potentially by approximately 1% the year following the dispersal of funds, IF all funds are required to complete the project.
      • The City has been setting aside additional tax revenues since 2019 to reduce the future impact of loan repayment for this project. If this step had not been taken, the project could have potentially increased taxes by 6%.
      • The detachment project is intended to take GHG emissions into account in construction, and will be an asset to serve the community for decades to come. Occupancy is anticipated to occur in 2024.
      • For more information on the project, loan authorization options, and updates, go to: http://princerupert.ca/.../city.../loan_authorizations
    • Council gave First and Second reading to proposed Zoning Bylaw 3485, and provided direction to staff that a Public Hearing would not be required for this bylaw because the proposed amendment is consistent with the OCP.
    • Council deferred consideration of Business Regulations and Licensing Bylaw No 3476, which touches on ‘renovictions’, to the next Council Meeting.
