Did you miss last night's Council meeting? See below for a summary of the main items from last night's meeting.
- Council held a Committee of the Whole where they received a presentation from Pawz United Rescue Society (PURS). Following their presentation, Council forwarded a resolution to the regular meeting to direct City staff to look into potential options for a small space, with access to water, for their society to use to temporarily house animals for recovery. The resolution passed in the Regular meeting.
- Council also received the final presentation on the budget from the Chief Financial Officer during the Committee of the Whole. Following an opportunity for the public to speak to the budget at the beginning of the Regular meeting that saw one participant, and a very fulsome discussion by Council (available on our Youtube Channel), Council passed the 2023 Budget inclusive of a 12.5% increase to the tax rate. Additional information on the budget, including proposed spending on an unprecedented number of capital projects as well as information on proposed debt, is available in the Documents and FAQ section.
- Council passed one Development Variance Permit and directed another to move to public notification.
- Council received a report from the Director of Operations on Phase 1 of the waterline replacement project, and approved the recommendation to award the project to Coast Tsimshian Northern Contractors Alliance (CTNCA) for up to $20 million, funded through Provincial grant. The first phase of the project will see the full replacement of the waterline on Shawatlan Road (through the Industrial site) as well as replacement and widening of the roadway above. This is the main waterline that enters our community, which saw two major breaks in the past year and is our highest priority in our Infrastructure Replacement Strategy given its age, condition and importance. For additional details on this project, see the full report in the agenda package linked below.
- Council voted to support a Liquor License Amendment for Wheelhouse Brewing Company’s lounge space at the new CN Rail Station location at the waterfront.
- Council approved a new fees and charges bylaw for Cow Bay Marina that brings rates closer in line with other marinas up and down the west coast.
As always – if you’re looking for additional information on any of the above items, please check out our Agendas page on our website, or request a copy from the front desk at City Hall.
