Project Fully Funded by the Province's Community Emergency Preparedness Fund

PRINCE RUPERT, APRIL 19th, 2023 -  In the coming months, the City will be selecting a contractor and initiating public engagement on a Climate Plan to guide how Prince Rupert’s infrastructure and services will adapt to the impacts of a climate change The contracted opportunity to work on the Plan was posted today through BC Bid, with proposals due by May 29th, 2023.

“As a City going through an extensive period of renewal and revitalization, it just makes sense to be considering how we can make our community ready to face the effects of a changing climate,” said Mayor Herb Pond. “This project, which is fully grant funded, will help us make sure that we have good data in hand to move forward, and are identifying opportunities to be energy and climate conscious wherever possible.”

Prince Rupert has already undertaken steps towards climate mitigation, with the Carbon Emissions Energy Plan, smart growth principles in the OCP, and capital projects such as the engineered wetlands wastewater project; However this plan will assist the City by forecasting climate data and potential impacts, and helping us have more systemic approaches to decision-making and priority setting. It will also look at the City’s existing policies and programs to identify ways we might adapt them to be more climate-ready.

As a part of the plan, there will also be outreach conducted to both the public and to neighbouring communities. The public is encouraged to keep an eye out for additional information we’ll be sharing for feedback in the local newspaper, City website, and our engagement platform, Rupert Talks at engage.princerupert.ca.
