Removal of the Existing Memorial Walls First Step to Area Improvements
PRINCE RUPERT, OCTOBER 30th, 2026 – As part of overall efforts to revitalize the existing memorial area in Mariners park, City crews will begin next week on removing the walls with dedications to those Lost at Sea, and those who loved the sea, taking care to preserve the dedicated bricks as best they can.
As part of work occurring in that area the City has dedicated budget to replacement of the walls with an accessible alternative memorial that will retain all names that were originally in the program, and grant funds have been obtained for additional improvements in the area. As part of the design process, the City commissioned a report regarding the condition of the Memorial Wall and it was determined that the condition of the wall has deteriorated beyond sustainable repair. Design and condition review work also flagged issues with the accessibility of the walls given current ground conditions.
The proposed plan for the area includes restructuring of the walls to be more seamlessly integrated into the walking area, and angling them so that all names are legible and can be read by passers by and visitors.
As noted above, the City is taking efforts to retain the bricks intact, and will work to make them available to those who originally purchased them and their families. If you are aware that your family has a brick in this wall and would like to be added to the list of those contacted to retrieve available bricks, please call (250) 627 0976 or email communications@princerupert.ca.
