2nd Avenue Bridge Closing Again Today

Type(s)
News Release

Following adjustments to the traffic management plan for the project, the 2nd Avenue bridge will be closing again today for repairs. Adjustments were made to accommodate higher than anticipated traffic volumes, and coordinate additional safety measures with CN.

What’s changed?

  • The alternate route via the CN access road is now for vehicle traffic ONLY, and it will be two-way traffic to improve flow and help prevent traffic back ups on either side of the access point
  • There may be occasional delays of 20-30 minutes due to train crossings. There is a stoplight, barricades and flagger in place to coordinate these closures as needed. The City and CN have also coordinated measures to ensure this will not unduly delay emergency response times.
  • Pedestrians and bicycles are no longer permitted to use CN Access Road. Anyone caught using the CN Access road on foot or by bicycle may be subject to fine by CN. Trespassing on railway property is considered an offence under federal law, which can result in fines, enforcement action, and potential arrest.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists are directed to use Moresby trail as the main access point (see map on next page for details). Signage/maps will are in place in multiple locations with directions to the alternate route. For safety, cyclists are recommended to dismount on the trail.
  • Overnight security patrols on Moresby Trail are being provided starting at 9 pm, and lighting has been installed along the straight through-fare of the trail to support safe passage. Use of side trails along Moresby is not recommended at night.
  • We understand that some may not feel comfortable using Moresby trail for nighttime travel, or may have mobility challenges that prevent access. The City will provide alternative transportation options for those who need them. This information has been sent via notice to all residents over the bridge, and instructions are to call City Hall at (250) 627 0934 or email cityhall@princerupert.ca
  • Barricades are in place in certain sections of Moresby Trail for the course of construction. Given there is high risk activity occurring overhead, for safety pedestrians should not go into these blocked off areas underneath the bridge.

This project is anticipated to take approximately 2 months to complete, and is critical to renewing this access point to this area of town. The City is also in the process of completing an alternate route study to develop future accesses. We appreciate your continued patience while this work is under way, and look forward to delivering a refreshed bridge in the near future.
