Key Goal is Advocacy for Reopening of Alaska Marine Highway

PRINCE RUPERT, B.C., SEPTEMBER 19th, 2025 –  Mayor Herb Pond is in Alaska this week, speaking on a transportation panel at the Southeast Conference (SEC). The panel focused on a proposal to reinstate the Alaska Marine Highway connection between Prince Rupert and Ketchikan—our sister city with which we share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties.

“The closure of the Alaska Marine Highway System since 2019 has been an ongoing topic of concern that we continue to work on with our Northern neighbours in Alaska,” said Mayor Herb Pond. “Resolving the security and capacity issues that need to be addressed to restore ferry service between Prince Rupert and Ketchikan is a strategic move. It will strengthen cross-border collaboration and unlock new economic opportunities for both regions.”

The SEC, which partially covered the cost of the Mayor’s participation, convened regional leaders, transportation experts, and policymakers to discuss the future of marine connectivity, among other issues, in Southeast Alaska. Prince Rupert’s participation in the SEC panel underscores the city’s dedication to strengthening its relationship with Alaska and provides an opportunity for us to advocate for infrastructure that serves the broader Pacific Northwest.

Prince Rupert extends its appreciation to the Southeast Conference and all interest holders involved in organizing this important regional gathering to meet and discuss shared challenges and opportunities. The City looks forward to continued dialogue and progress in the months and years ahead.
