Solution to Boil Water Notice Still Under Investigation

News Release

AUGUST 22nd, 2025 - PRINCE RUPERT – Please note the ongoing Boil Water Notice remains under investigation by the City’s Engineer of Record, who is working with staff on a long-term solution.

The issue stems from difficulty maintaining adequate chlorine disinfection at the end of the water distribution system, particularly for the area over the 2nd Avenue bridge. This is largely due to oversized pipes originally built to serve fish plants that no longer operate, which now impacts circulation and associated water quality. Residents may have noticed hydrant flushing in this area to improve flow, but this measure alone has not been able to resolve the problem. Factors impacting the effectiveness of disinfection also include elevated summer temperatures, natural organic matter present in the lake sourced water, as well as the age/condition of the pipes.

The City is committed to addressing the root cause and ensuring the system meets all safety standards before the notice is lifted. We will share further updates as they become available, but at this time there is no confirmed timeline for removal of the notice.

BACKGROUND:

A Boil Water Notice means that residents and water system users must heat the water to a rapid boil for at least 1 minute then cool and place in a food grade storage container. This must be done in advance of consumption for brushing teeth, drinking and cooking, washing vegetables for consumption raw, and making ice. Use of water for bathing and washing clothes is considered safe without boiling.

Owners of public facilities are requested to post Boil Water Notices at all sinks or drinking water fountains accessible to the public, alternatively, public fountains and taps should be turned off). As opportunities arise they must also advise their clientele verbally of the Boil Water Notice.

We also ask that residents please share this information with your neighbours.

The City sent this notice on August 6th to local media and directly to residents via our municipal app and Connect Rocket emergency alert program. If you or someone you know have not subscribed to these services, please do so at www.princerupert.ca/emergency.
