Project Required to Move Towards Treatment of Wastewater

PRINCE RUPERT, B.C., AUGUST 1st, 2025 –The City of Prince Rupert is advising residents and visitors that important infrastructure work will begin in mid-August 2025 in the Rushbrook Improvement Area, temporarily impacting vehicle parking and traffic in the vicinity. Care is being taken to minimize these impacts, given the busy season, and pedestrian access through the area will remain open throughout the project to ensure that residents can continue to enjoy the Rushbrook Trail, the Gymnastics facility and area businesses. Individual notices are also being shared with these impacted parties as well.

Anticipated impacts include:

  • Investigatory works through hydro-vac excavation – temporary disruption of 2 parking stalls at a time with site signage posted;
  • Single lane traffic and traffic controls on George Hills Way between Dry Dock Road and Rushbrook Floats to accommodate a staged excavation and works on the utility lines in the area;
  • Temporary closure of the Rushbrook Parking Lot past the Port Edward Harbour Authority office;
  • Access to the boat launch will be maintained throughout the duration of the project, but staging may occur adjacent to this area and traffic controls will be in place; and,
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained, however more now than ever, recreational users of the Rushbrook Trail are encouraged to park in the free parking lot in Seal Cove.

The work is part of a broader plan to prepare local infrastructure for future wastewater treatment. Specifically, the work will eliminate Outfall J, a stormwater outfall located beneath Rushbrook Floats. The plan includes consolidating wastewater flows from Outfall J into the existing Outfall I system, improving environmental management in the area.

Further details, including timelines and updates related to parking disruptions, will be shared via the City’s website and social media channels as the work progresses. We appreciate the community’s patience while this necessary work is conducted.
