Hospital, Charles Hays Secondary and Kootenay/Mckay Street Equipped with new Transit Amenities

PRINCE RUPERT, JUNE 2nd, 2025 – Thanks in part to funding from the BC Transit Shelter Program, the City of Prince Rupert now has three additional transit shelters to support bus users in the community. The shelters are located at the Prince Rupert Hospital, Kootenay and Mckay Street, and Charles Hays High School, which are all priority locations based on the number of active users and community need in those areas.

“The priority of more shelters at bus stops is something that we heard loud and clear from transit users when we did our work on our Transportation Plan, and we’re happy to be delivering on that request from the community,” said Mayor Herb Pond. “We’re also grateful to BC Transit for providing grant funds to support this work, and look forward to making continued improvements in the years to come.”

The new shelters will provide extra protection from the elements, which we know is needed in Prince Rupert, and have been designed with accessibility in mind so that wheelchair users are able to shelter under the protected area. Providing additional transit amenities in priority areas is a key goal of the City’s Transportation Plan, and the City has also contributed partial funding to the improvements in the 2023-2024 budget, with pads installed earlier this year.

The BC Transit Shelter Program provides access for municipalities to Provincial and Federal funding that enables affordable bus stop upgrades for local governments, who cover the costs of concrete pad installations and maintenance.
