No Injuries, Fire Contained to Construction Camp at Entrance to Island
PRINCE RUPERT, JANUARY 2nd, 2026 – Just after 2 am this morning, Prince Rupert and Port Edward Fire Departments responded to a structure fire on site at the construction camp located at the entrance way to Watson Island, which is now under control. No injuries have been reported as the site was vacant apart from maintenance staff who reported the fire.
Crews mobilized a fire break to prevent the spread of fire to the administrative buildings nearby, and the fire is under control with crews on site to manage potential hot spots. Despite best efforts of responding crews, there has been significant damage to the work camp.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Fire Department and local RCMP.
