Spring Spruce Up programs are available to support residents, improve neighbourhoods, and help local businesses refresh the downtown core
PRINCE RUPERT, MAY 6th, 2026 –The City of Prince Rupert is rolling out a series of coordinated cleanup and beautification initiatives designed to support residents, improve neighbourhood appearance, and help local businesses contribute to a more vibrant and welcoming community. This year’s efforts include a free landfill tipping day for up to 100 kg on Saturday, May 16th, continued promotion of the Derelict Vehicle Removal Program, Business Façade Improvement program, reminders about yard waste burning permits, and the launch of a new City Core Spruce Up Campaign for downtown businesses.
“Spring is a chance for the community to refresh and take some time to brighten up the place we are all so lucky to call home,” said Mayor Herb Pond. “When we all do a little, it goes a long way.”
City Core Spring Spruce Up Campaign
From now until August 24, 2026, the City is taking a more flexible and streamlined approach to reviewing minor exterior improvements in the City Core. This temporary policy adjustment allows businesses to repaint, rebrand, and tidy up their façades without meeting development permit guidelines related to colour and material. Directed by Council, this initiative is not a new bylaw and does not change any safety rules, and people will still need to obtain Development Permits for any significant aesthetic changes. It simply allows staff to approve minor visual improvements more easily no matter where the proposal is in the downtown.
The goal is to support local businesses in making small but meaningful upgrades that contribute to a cleaner, brighter, and more welcoming city centre. Interested in learning more? Reach out to Development Services at development.services@princerupert.ca or call (250) 627 2822.
Free Landfill Tipping Day – 100 kg of Residential Waste at No Cost
To make spring cleaning easier, the City will host a one‑day free landfill tipping event on Saturday, May 16th, coinciding with the Victoria Day long weekend. Residents may drop off up to 100 kilograms of residential refuse at no charge with proof of Prince Rupert residency (photo ID required). Regular tipping fees apply beyond the free 100 kg. This initiative is intended to support residents with their Spring cleaning efforts and help reduce illegal dumping during this busy season.
Business Façade Improvement Program
Jointly funded by the City and the Northern Development Initiative Trust, the Business Façade Improvement Program helps property and business owners revitalize their commercial façades. Eligible projects for existing buildings in Downtown or Cow Bay can receive a grant covering 50% of costs, up to a maximum of $5,000. This program is not yet fully subscribed for the year, so interested businesses are encouraged to reach out to our Economic Development Officer, Leandri Kleinhans at (250) 627 2840 or by email at leandri.kleinhans@princerupert.ca.
Yard Waste Burning Requires a Permit
Residents planning to burn yard debris are reminded that a valid burn permit is required from the local Fire Department. Burn permits ensure safe burning practices and help reduce the risk of uncontrolled fires. Residents should obtain a permit before burning any brush or yard waste, or clean, untreated lumber. Note that fires must be monitored at all time by someone with the equipment needed to keep it under control, and burning of household garbage is not permitted. Contact the Fire Department by calling (250) 627 1248 to learn more about how to get one or if one has been issued to a neighbour if you are concerned about backyard burning in your area.
Derelict Vehicle Removal Program
The City continues to offer its successful Derelict Vehicle Removal Program, which has already removed dozens of abandoned vehicles from yards, lanes, and streets across Prince Rupert. For a $70 fee per vehicle, the City will coordinate removal and towing. Note that this program is only applicable to standard sized vehicles. RVs, campers, boats and other larger sized vehicles are not eligible.
To participate, residents just:
- Provide proof of ownership
- Sign over ownership of the vehicle to the City
- Remove all waste and personal items from inside the vehicle
All collected vehicles are recycled, preventing unnecessary landfill waste and improving neighbourhood appearance. For more information, contact the City’s Bylaw Department at (250) 624 6852 or email bylaw@princerupert.ca.
The City of Prince Rupert encourages all residents and businesses to take part in these initiatives and help build a more vibrant, attractive, and community‑proud Prince Rupert as we move into the spring and summer seasons.
