Week of January 20th
PRINCE RUPERT, JANUARY 14th, 2025 – The City and Northern Savings Credit Union are teaming up to support access to recreation for all in Prince Rupert. Northern Savings has generously donated $5,000 annually for the next three years to support a week of FREE programs at the City’s Recreation Complex during Family Literacy Week, the Recreation Access Program, and free community events and programs during school breaks. This year-round partnership will help support many families access recreation in our community, starting with Family Literacy Week, which happens the third week of January every year. In addition to a number of awesome community-wide free programs, there will be free access to all drop-in Recreation Programming in the Auditorium and Gymnasium January 20-26th.
“We are thrilled to support the Unplug and Play event and other upcoming free programs at the Civic Centre, as they reflect our dedication to neighbours helping neighbours. Being active and having an opportunity to unplug, promotes well-being and strengthens social bonds. We are excited to partner with the City of Prince Rupert, its Recreation and Community Services Department, and other community groups on these important initiatives and look forward to seeing the programs build and grow over the next few years,” said Northern Savings CEO and President, Stefan Delloch.
Thanks to the generous support of our sponsor, the Unplug and Play event will offer over 30 diverse activities. Free programs range from everything from a community event at the library, spin and juggling, to swordplay, skating, dance and yoga. Each activity is designed to promote physical literacy, mental, and emotional well-being while providing a space for individuals and families to enjoy quality time together and unplug from digital devices. This is part of the Department’s broader commitment to promoting physical literacy in the community – building confidence and skills for residents of all ages and abilities to feel confident in moving their bodies.
“We’re really excited to be offering the Unplug and Play program for the first year with our friends at Northern Savings,” said Nicole Beauregard, Director of Recreation and Community Services. “We’re excited for Rupert families to see the range of programs our community has on offer. In addition, the contribution to our Recreation Access Program and free programming during school breaks, this initiative helps to ensure that families who need it have better access to recreation all year round.”
Thank you to our many community partners for working with us to make this happen.
