Panel Discussion on Transportation and Economic Benefits of Restored Alaska Ferry Stop to Prince Rupert
PRINCE RUPERT, OCTOBER 5th, 2026 – Last week, Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond and staff attended the Southeast Alaska Conference in Ketchikan, Alaska. The Mayor spoke on a panel of local delegates advocating for the return of the Alaska Ferry to Prince Rupert, noting its important link as a regional transportation and economic development asset. In addition to the City, the Prince Rupert Port Authority had staff attending, and during the event there were two Alaska Senators speaking in favour of the return of the service.
“There was decent momentum at this event towards restoring the service,” said Mayor Herb Pond. “We have strong support from Alaska’s political representatives.”
The Prince Rupert stop on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system has been de-commissioned since 2019. This is the second visit this year to Alaska to continue to advocate for restoration of service.
