6th Ave West Full Road Closure Starting Wednesday between McBride and Thompson Streets

Type(s)
News Release

As work continues on the BIG Project to replace failing pipes in the area, there will be a full road closure of 6th Avenue West between McBride and Thompson Streets starting first thing on Wednesday, October 21st. During the closure, local traffic (ie. people going to addresses within the construction area) will be permitted through, and emergency vehicles will also have access to all properties in the area. Sidewalks will remain open, and waste collection will also not be impacted. Residents heading west from McBride are recommended to detour through 5th Avenue West and to follow all posted traffic signage and controls.

The Prince Rupert Library remains open their regular hours during the course of construction, however it is anticipated that the first two days of construction, there will be no access to the Library parking lot as pipe replacement work will be occurring right at the entrance to the parking lot. Library patrons may park in available spaces in the surrounding area and use available sidewalks for access. Please be cautious not to block any driveways of the surrounding residences and buildings. If you find that access is a challenge, the Library also offers home delivery service and curbside pick-up, as well as a huge selection of digital resources like audio books and eBooks through their “Libby” app, which you can access with a free library card. The Library makes delivery available to those who need it by reaching out to 250-627-1345 or via circulation@princerupertlibrary.ca.

Note – there is currently Advanced Polling for the Provincial Election happening from 8 am to 8 pm at the Library today and continuing until the end of the day on Wednesday the 21st, which will overlap that one day with the expanded road closure start. If you were hoping to get to the advanced polls instead of the General Election on October 24th at the Civic Centre, please note the above parking impacts and consider going today or tomorrow (Monday or Tuesday). Anticipating the additional pedestrian traffic, there will be traffic flaggers on site to support people heading to the polls on Wednesday.

This project will move along 6th Avenue West in phases, with reopening of the roadway in a gravel state once pipe replacements have been completed and it is safe to do so. Additional information will be shared as the project advances. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to deliver these critical infrastructure improvements.
