Council Meetings

Regular Council Meetings are generally held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month, unless they fall on a holiday, in which case the meeting will be held on the next business day. Regular Council meetings start 7:00 p.m., take place in Council Chambers on the second floor at City Hall, 424 3rd Avenue West, and are open to the public. At each Regular Meeting, there is an opportunity for members of the public to come forward and speak on matters before Council on that meeting's agenda. 

Special Council Meetings are called on an as-needed basis to allow for Council to provide direction on matters that require a timely response. Twenty-four hour advanced notification of these meetings is required, with notification processes determined by the City’s Council Procedure Bylaw.

On an as needed basis, City Council may also hold Closed Meetings to discuss items as permitted by Section 90 of the Community Charter. These meetings are generally scheduled for 5:00 p.m., in advance of the scheduled Regular Council Meeting. Additional information on the different rationales for closing a meeting are available through the Provincial website - but generally, they are closed to allow for discussions of 'land, legal and labour'. 

Public attendance and participation are encouraged at Committee of the Whole meetings. It is also an appropriate forum for public delegations to make presentations, because the committee structure allows for less formal discussion and questions from Council.
