Lifeguard Training ongoing so schedule change anticipated to be temporary
PRINCE RUPERT, SEPTEMBER 5th, 2024 – Following the summer, the City has received notice that we will be losing a number of our lifeguarding staff at the Recreation Department. Effective September 9th, pool hours will decrease by 18.5 hours overall within the existing schedule until vacant positions can be filled. The updated schedule is now live on our website and Recreation social media page. Swim lessons will also be affected by this staffing shortage and most likely will not resume until December.
Selection of hours to reduce was associated with the number of active users in the facility during those times, as well as the availability of staff. Thankfully, it is anticipated that the change to schedule will likely be temporary. The Recreation Department is currently running a lifeguarding training program with several registrants and associated employment placement opportunities that closes at the end of November. We are hopeful that the regular fall schedule will resume as soon as possible given work to train additional potential staff, and appreciate the patience of the public while we do our best to address this reduction in capacity.
