Fire Chief Dave Mckenzie had the opportunity to take a break from his position as Fire Chief late October, handing it over to Stella Barton, 6, from Lax Kxeen Elementary School. Stella was named Fire Chief for a day after submitting her name in a contest during Fire Safety Week presentations in local schools.
After claiming her new role, Stella was picked up by firefighters and Sparky in her school gymnasium, given a ride to the Fire Hall in the fire truck, and then taken on a tour of the Fire Department and Fire museum. Stella was also presented with a gift bag and fire safety supplies to bring home to her family.
She also had the opportunity to flex her new responsibility, and completed a fire inspection of the Safeway bakery, where she was presented with a free cake for herself and her classmates. After a free lunch donated by McDonalds with the firefighters, she returned to class.
Stella said her favourite part of the day was having Sparky come to her school, and winning Fire Chief for a Day.
Fire Prevention week was sponsored in part by Pembina’s Fire Safety Grant, which provided funding for safety kits that were provided to both students and elders in the community.
