The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is a national, federal, provincial and municipal policing body. It is an agency of the Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada.

The Prince Rupert detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police serves the City of Prince Rupert as well as a huge surrounding area. Our city detachment has a current strength of 28 regular members including: the General Investigation Section, a Police Service Dog and Dog Handler, one Forensic Identification Specialist, and a Crime Prevention/ Media Relations Officer. The Prince Rupert RCMP detachment also houses a branch of the Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU). That unit is comprised of two members funded by the Province and one city funded member. The IRSU works toward reducing the motor vehicle related fatalities and crashes in the Prince Rupert area through education and enforcement.

The Prince Rupert RCMP also maintains several volunteer groups that assist in striving to meet our goals of safe homes and a safe community. The RCMP Auxiliary Constables and Citizens On Patrol (C.O.P.) are comprised of Prince Rupert residents that volunteer their time to make their community a better place to live.

The Rural Section of the Prince Rupert RCMP polices villages from Port Simpson to Hartley Bay and everywhere in between.

Prince Rupert is fortunate to be home to many of the RCMP's Federal and Provincial units. The PV Inkster and her crew are stationed here in Prince Rupert as part of the West Coast Marine Section. The Inkster is crewed by RCMP members that police the West Coast of Canada, from the North end of Vancouver Island to the Alaskan border including many isolated communities along BC's coast.

The Border Integrity Section has three members working in Prince Rupert. The Border Integrity Program (BIP) works to protect Canadians from terrorism, organized crime, smuggling and other border-related crime. In Prince Rupert specifically, the BIP is preparing for the opening of Prince Rupert's Container Port and for the increased criminal activity it is likely to bring.

Prince Rupert's Federal Drug Enforcement Unit works to reduce the supply of and demand for, illicit products using an integrated approach involving measures for prevention, education, and enforcement. In addition to their investigation of larger drug trafficking operations, the Unit provides guidance and assistance to the detachment personnel in municipal level drug investigations.

Prince Rupert is also home to a second, provincially funded, Forensic Identification Specialist and one amphibious plane and crew from our Air Services Unit. While the plane serves the entire region and can be utilized anywhere in BC, it's based in Prince Rupert, allowing the RCMP in Prince Rupert to utilize it for transport to the many isolated areas that we police.
