Council Corner Update - November 26th

  • At the Committee of the Whole meeting, resident Christine Malaka presented to Council on the importance of trees to the community, and the opportunity to institute regulations protecting legacy/heritage trees.
  • At the Committee of the Whole meeting, Michael Gurney presented regarding the programming and benefits of the Prince Rupert Community Arts Council. This is the first of many presentations that Council has scheduled for the upcoming year, where taxpayer funded organizations share information on their operations with Council and residents.
  • Council received a report from the Communications Manager summarizing feedback received at the Community Information Meeting on proposed regulation of cannabis retail in the City.
  • Council voted to change the alternate director for the Northwest Regional Hospital District from Councillor Adey to Councillor Niesh, due to the committee’s requirement that the positions be shared with the North Coast Regional District Board positions, due to the scheduling of meetings on the same day.
  • Council voted to appoint the Councillors listed below to the following committees:
    • Prince Rupert Airport Authority: Councillor Niesh
    • Prince Rupert Library Board:  Councillor Adey
    • Civic Awards & Recognition Working Group: All of Council
    • Performing Arts Society: Councillor Adey
    • Recreation Commission: Councillor Niesh (Chair), Councillor Randhawa, Councillor Skelton-Morven
    • Healthy Communities Committee: Councillor Cunningham
    • Tourism Prince Rupert: Councillor Mirau
    • NDIT – Northwest Regional Advisory Committee: Councillor Skelton-Morven, (Director), Councillor Mirau (Alternate)
    • BC Ferries North and Central Advisory Committee: Councillor Cunningham
  • Council voted to proclaim November 2018 be proclaimed as Adoption Awareness Month in the City of Prince Rupert.
  • Council passed the second reading of proposed Bylaw 3430, 2018, amended to include the area known locally as “5 Corners” in Schedule A (the map designated areas where cannabis retail use is proposed to be permitted). A public hearing will occur December 10th, 2018 at 7 pm immediately before the Regular Council Meeting. This is an opportunity for the community to provide feedback regarding the proposed bylaw, or in writing to the Planning Department in advance of December 10th. The proposed bylaw is available for viewing at the front counter or online in the Notice section of the City website.
