2018 GENERAL LOCAL ELECTIONS NOTICE OF NOMINATION

 

Public Notice is given to the electors of the City of Prince Rupert that nominations for the offices of:

  • Mayor – One (1) to be elected
  • Councillor – Six (6) to be elected
  • School Board Trustee – Six (6) to be elected

will be received by the Chief Election Officer or a designated person, as follows:

From:    9:30 a.m. September 4, 2018

To:          4:30 p.m. September 14, 2018

Excluding Statutory holidays and weekends

 

Nomination forms are available at the City of Prince Rupert Administration Office during regular office hours (9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) until the close of the nomination period Friday, September 14, 2018. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE

A person is qualified to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a member of local government if they meet the following criteria:

  • Canadian citizen;
  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day (October 20, 2018);
  • resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed;
  • a person who has been granted freedom of the municipality, if that person is a Canadian citizen; and
  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from being nominated for, being elected to or holding office, or be otherwise disqualified by law.

 

LIST OF REGISTERED ELECTORS

Beginning Tuesday, September 4th, 2018 until the close of general voting for the election on Saturday, October 20th, 2018, a copy of the list of registered electors will be available for public inspection, at Prince Rupert City Hall, during regular office hours 9:30am-4:30pm, Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays. Before inspecting the list, a person must sign a statement that they will not inspect the list or use the information included in the list except for the purposes of Part 3 – Electors and Elections of the Local Government Act. An elector may request that their address or other information about them be omitted from or obscured on the list of electors. 

 

OBJECTION TO REGISTRATION OF AN ELECTOR

An objection to the registration of a person whose name appears on the list of registered electors may be made in accordance with the Local Government Act until 4:00 pm on Friday, September 14th, 2018. An objection must be in writing and may only be made by a person entitled to be registered as an elector of the City of Prince Rupert and can only be made on the basis that a person whose name appears on the list of electors has died or that a person whose name appears on the list of electors is not qualified to be registered as an elector of the City of Prince Rupert.

 

 

ADVANCE ELECTOR REGISTRATION

Resident Electors

Are you eligible to vote in the October elections for Prince Rupert? Is your name on the current list of electors?

If you are not sure you can find out by calling Elections BC at 1-800-661-8683.

Advance elector registrations will be accepted at elections.bc.ca/register-to-vote until Tuesday, August 28th, 2018. August 29th onward is the Closed Period – see below.

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day for the election or assent voting; and
  • a Canadian citizen; and
  • a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
  • a resident of the City of Prince Rupert for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law.

 

Non-Resident Property Owner Electors

Are you a non-resident property owner eligible to vote at the October Elections for Mayor, Councillor and School Board Trustee in Prince Rupert?

If you are not sure, you can find out by calling or visiting the City of Prince Rupert, Administration Office, 424 - 3rd Avenue West, Prince Rupert, B.C. V8J 1L7, 250.627.0934.  The office is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday (excluding holidays).

Advance non-resident property owner elector registrations will be accepted at the City of Prince Rupert Administration Office until August 28th, 2018 provided the person meets the following qualifications:

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day for the election or assent voting; and
  • a Canadian citizen; and
  • a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
  • a registered owner of real property in the City of Prince Rupert for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
  • not entitled to register as a resident elector; and
  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law; and
  • if there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector.

 

CLOSED PERIOD FOR ADVANCE ELECTOR REGISTRATION

Elector registrations will not be accepted during the period of Wednesday, August 29th,2018 through Saturday, October 20th, 2018, but will be accepted on voting days.


CAMPAIGN PERIOD EXPENSE LIMITS

In accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, for the 2018 general local election, the following expense limits for candidates during the campaign period apply:

                                                Mayor                                                            $10,713.00

                                                Councillor                                                   $ 5,356.50

                                                School Trustee                                            $ 5,378.50

 


THIRD PARTY ADVERTISING LIMITS

In accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, for the 2018 general local elections, the following third party advertising limits apply:
